Description |
Design the first Italian CubeSat for Internet of Things (IoT) mission in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and to lay the foundations for the related IoT service infrastructure, from IoT end user devices to IoT network and application servers. This is considered the first steps towards the realization of an Italian CubeSat constellation able to provide a competitive IoT service, with global coverage, low cost and low power consumption. The BISS project will use state-of-the-art dual connectivity, with both terrestrial and satellite networks, and a novel bi-directional communication link between satellites and end user devices on ground. The latter will allow to transmit satellite ephemerides to each end user device and thus to provide them with the information for switching from idle to operative mode when satellite passages are foreseen. As a consequence, a significant power saving will be possible, allowing reduced dimensions and, in turn, an easy installation in remote zones. Several applications will be enabled by the IoT service, allowing the environment monitoring, as well as the monitoring of mining infrastructures, oil and gas infrastructures, agriculture and livestock and many others. |
