Test the attitude determination and control system (ADCS) of the modular, expandable, and open source OreSat bus.

Description

Provides flight heritage for the attitude determination and control system (ADCS) of the modular, expandable, and open source OreSat bus.

OreSat0.5 paves the way for OreSat1, a NASA CSLI program 2U CubeSat with a global climate science and STEM outreach mission.

OreSat0.5 is the second CubeSat that is demonstrating the “OreSat bus”, a flexible, modular, and inexpensive educational CubeSat platform intended for students and amateurs to be able to build their own CubeSat. The bus is extendable from 1U to 3U, and is fully compliant to the CubeSat Design Specification Rev 13.

All details are provided on the OreSat website such that builders can rapidly get a compliant and highly scalable satellite constructed with minimal cost and risk. OreSat0.5’s mission is meant to extend the flight heritage of this system.

This includes:

  1. Demonstrating an open source Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) meant to be specifically used for antenna and camera pointing on amateur radio satellites.
  2. Demonstrating the “DxWiFi” S band 802.11b bidirectional radio system, proving that high speed (1 Mbps) S band communications can be done from amateur radio satellites.
  3. Providing openly published high sample rate flight performance characteristics including power and thermal performance.
  4. And of course, providing further flight heritage for the open source critical subsystems (radios, batteries, solar, etc), as well as openly published detailed performance data on the system.
